Rooster Tails
If I had to pick one lure that I have used more than any other it would be the Rooster Tail. it is not always the best but I have used it in more parts of the country for more different fish than any other. If I am traveling and do not know what to expect ,there will always be a Rooster Tail or 2 in my tackle box. I have used it on Trout in the mountain streams of Utah. I have caught Smallmouth Bass in Arkansas with it as well as landlocked Salmon in Alaska. It works for casting as well as trolling behind a kayak.
I typically replace the treble hooks on them with Gamakatsu single Siwash hooks. I find the single hook works just as good and makes it easier to release the fish quickly.
For trolling behind a kayak start with the Rooster Tail beside the kayak so you can view the action to determine the correct speed for the kayak. cast it behind you and start covering water. You will typically be able to feel a slight vibration through the rod and with practice will figure out how the lure is acting based on the vibrations you feel . It may not always be the best lure but is a very versatile lure that deserves a place in your tackle box.
